The Meligrove Band - Toronto, 12/9/06
Posted: 12.14.06 | Categories: [Bicycles] [Meligrove Band]
With a signing to V2 Records, multiple Chart reader's poll nominations (including Jay Nunes as "sexiest Canadian male"), a hugely-successful national tour under their belts, and their latest release "Planets Conspire" reaching high on many a' music critic's "Best Of 2006" list - it's a pretty damn good time to be the Meligrove Band. On Saturday the Meligroves were welcomed back home from their tour to the Mod Club stage, where they were joined by cuddly local band and friends The Bicycles, plus Halifax pop quintet Their Majesties (SuperSloanHermitFriendz anyone? You betchya). With the stage appropriately strung with holiday lights, the band concentrated mainly on songs from Planets Conspire, with an occasional nod to their back catalog. It's pretty common for a Meligrove show to quickly evolve into a dance party on stage, and this one was no exception, packing in various members of the Bicycles, Henri & the Adorables, and By Divine Right for mind-blowing encores. If you'd like to hear what all the hubbub's about, stream some music from the band's Myspace page. Or better yet, watch the video for "Everyone's A Winner" here. Or BEST yet - go pick up any of their 3 albums. (Above was from my review post on BlogTO). Additional photos from the show (all bands) are HERE, or view as slideshow HERE!

beat.
remember the last time meligrove played the mod club and it was bestever results? lately the mod club has been hit and miss with color and everything.
did you use flash?
i can't tell if you did or if the lights were just really bright. alot of these i think would have been super rad if the individual was sorta by their lonesome, for example, #7, if it was just the main guitarist because its such a cleaner/clearer image versus the other things in the image that are sorta duller in sharpness and color by comparison but that is probably a dumb suggestion because then you lose all the other stuff. and it probably isnt your fault either because the mod clubs lighting makes for tricky business.
also some of them feel really busy. and i realize there was alot on stage going on and maybe you were trying to get it all? and maybe its just me but some of them there is no clear focus point so your eye just wonders around and nothing captures its attention to make it go, hotdog!
number 6 is my favorite for the meli shots though.
some other things:
- number 2 of the bikes set is really great with the angle and the lights, but i probably would have cut out henry, i think it would have brought andrew more into the main focus.
- bikes number 7 and 8 set up a great frame for dana, it kinda has this narrow light at the end of a long hall feel to it which is neat.
- their majesties photos are super nice. the first three especially, you should send them to them. they are clear and well angled and the bg effects are perfectly positioned.
ok. hopefully it was alright to say some of that/we are still pals.
cheers

Blame the Meligrove Band for the lighting - they kept it mostly low to show their lovely Christmas lights. Or backlit (like the bright white light behind Jay's head that makes it look like flash. I used no Flash at this show, I never do at Mod Club. The best lighting was had by Their Majesties, as you can probably tell.
re: Busy-ess - I think the reason I've been trying to capture "whole band" more often is because the bands themselves tend to ask for those. Even though I like the single person shot better aesthetically, I can see why the bands like to put "whole band" shots on their websites and stuff. But I'll try to remember to do a variety.
#2 Bikes - the reason I couldn't cut out Henry is because I always keep my photos in proportion (800 x 533), so to crop the side would also mean cropping the bottom (i.e. cropping out Brendan). And we wouldn't want to do that, would we? Enough damage has already been done to the Adorables. (Haha, I hope you see what I mean, though). I'm just not a fan of odd-shaped or square photos for the sake of a crop, unless it absolutely MUST be done.
It's funny how you and other like Meli#06... it was my least favourite, I almost didn't include it. I hated that weird light effect on the back curtains - talk about busy/distracting!!! Ah well, different strokes for different folks.
