The Weakerthans - Toronto, 7/29/06

Posted: 07.31.06 | Category: [The Weakerthans]

When the Weakerthans' John K. Samson opened Saturday's Harbourfront show with a solo version of "One Great City!", it wasn't at all difficult for the Toronto crowd to join in singing "I.. hate.. Winnipeg!" with gusto. In fact the whole night was filled with enthusiastic singalongs, both new and old. It's hard to pigeon-hole the Weakerthans into a defineable genre, because I think they bring a bit of everything to everyone, but what they bring best are lovely tales of contemplation, cats and Canadiana topped with warm smiles & pop-rock melodies. The night was hot as #%@! and sprinkled with rain and heat lightening, but the Weakerthans made it a splendid night for rock.

There was no clear "winner" in this photoset, but I think I liked John's earnest yet happy expression here the best. Perhaps because he resembles a baby bird (boys who sing with their eyes closed = yes). The rest of the shots from this show can be seen here on the old Flickr slideshow.

  • shouldn't it be "ye olde bloge" ?

i think there should also be an unspoken rule that guys should do passionate things with eyes closed

  • i was going to say my favorite/WINNER was #2 via flickr numbers. though his half body makes me keep checking down to see if i have the rest of my body. it is conflicting.

    - i also like #13, you got the white light perfectly on his left side.

    - #1,3,4 are similar (i can see the differences though) so i was trying to figure out which i preferred. i liked the shadows better on #3 but i think the expression is bester caught on #4 (see: wrinkled tight eyes).

    - #22 not only for the obvious eyes wide expression but because i like the slowly fading dissapearing lights in the backdrop.

    cheers

  • Thank you, XchampionoflifeX, I was getting concerned.
#1-4 are similar yes. Good call on #4, I think it is my co-favourite because of the wrinkled eyes. I picked #1 to feature here on this blog because of your boyfriend!.

#22 - he looks kind terrified, but the lights in the back sold me on it.

  • just wanted to thank you for capturing some beautiful and unique moments in indy-rock history (corny, and seeming inplausable, i know. indy-rock history? well, i think these bands are in their prime and to document them so well is something to be commended :) I also am an American girl with a mushrooming love-affair with Canadian indy-rock. These pictures are incredible (i take horrible concert photos). Just wanted to extend a friendly thanks! :)

  • Awesome, Carrie, thanks! Canada (Toronto in particular) really does have a great music/indie-rock community. There are some amazing bands blossoming here - keep your eyes & ears open as they start to tour the states (The Meligrove Band is one that comes to mind). Feel free to email me if you have any questions re: Canadian music.
