Salzburg, Austria

We landed in Munich 40 minutes late and scrambled to get out on to the autobahn. Germans favour efficient little boxy cars over muscle engines, so everywhere we looked people were zooming around in aerodynamic pods. German motorways work amazingly well – everyone moves along at impressive speed, yet we didn’t witness a single road accident in our entire 2 weeks. Germany and Austria also intelligently chose not to spoil their lovely vistas with tacky roadside billboards and ads. Bravo to that.

We made it into Austria in record time, but a late plane + a wee bit of getting lost in Salzburg meant that we missed the Sound of Music Tour that I had my heart set on. So unfortunately I was not able to Climb Every Mountain or discover how to solve a problem like Maria. But the upside is that we had an entire day and night to explore Salzburg at our leisure. We checked into the Hotel Goldene Ente (“Yellow Duck”), where we received the very best smiling, rosey-cheeked, fair-haired, big-boned, muslin dress & kerchief-wearing Bavarian hospitality from our wonderful hostess. We set out onto Salzburg’s narrow cobblestone streets to visit Mirabelle Gardens, Mozart Platz, and numerous old churches (this would become a reoccurring theme all trip). The Salzburg Aldstadt - “old town” - is very charming and full of horse carriages and local folks (who were all incidentally quite attractive) on bicycles. We had excellent Franziskaner Weiss dunkl for dinner (oh, and some food, too), and the next morning I enjoyed perhaps my favourite snack of the entire trip – an incredible flaky sweet cheese strudel with white raisins. I swear I could’ve eaten a dozen of those suckers. You have my heart, Salzburg, I will be back.
